1. The House January 6 committee voted to subpoena former President Donald Trump on Thursday. The committee still has a report to publish and could also request that the Justice Department pursue charges against Trump or his former aides for their roles in helping to incite the attack on the Capitol and their efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

2. Maine students could face hate crime charges after threats were found on a bathroom wall. Spruce Mountain High School says the students have been suspended for 10 days as the police department and AG’s Office investigates. The two students were identified through surveillance cameras in the school.

3. Heavy rainfall is expected to sweep across the state, prompting a flood warning. Due to the high quantity of precipitation, flash flooding is likely, with fallen leaves and other debris expected to clog storm drains.

4. Nearly 360,000 Mainers expected to benefit from Social Security increase. The historic 8.7 percent increase will begin in 2023 and is the largest cost-of-living adjustment for Social Security since the early 1980s. The increase means they’ll get, on average, an extra $127 a month.

5. Dogs and cats rescued from Florida and Puerto Rico are now in Maine. Hurricanes Fiona and Ian left a path of devastation and overcrowded animal shelters. Some of those animals have made the trip to Maine and are ready for adoption at The Animal Refuge League. If you’re willing to help care for some of these pets while they wait for their adoption, you can reach out to the shelter through its website.
