1. Less than two weeks before the Nov. 8 election, Mills and LePage had a heated debate last night. The candidates attacked each other’s records in exchanges on the economy, the pandemic, education, and books. At one point Mills fired back at LePage and said “I’ve spent the better part of my career listening to loud men talk tough to disguise their weaknesses. That’s what I’m hearing tonight from Mr. LePage. And that’s what I heard for eight years from Paul LePage.” (PH)

2. Cape Elizabeth high school is closed today so janitors can complete a deep sanitization of the building. Over 20% of high schoolers are currently absent due to illness and over 50% of those students have COVID-19 or COVID-19-like symptoms. (WMTW)

3. Maine is enforcing new rules to eliminate vulgar vanity license plates that exploded in popularity after the state essentially eliminated its review process. The secretary of state began sending letters this month recalling offensive license plates. (WGME)

4. Elon Musk has completed his Twitter takeover. In a tweet on Thursday, Elon Musk said he didn’t buy the firm “to make more money. I did it to try to help humanity, whom I love”. Musk has reportedly fired a CEO, CFO, general counsel and Twitter’s head of legal, policy, and trust. (TMZ)

5. Upgraded Points ranked the best US cities to visit for a ‘canna-cation’ based on 26 factors. The only east coast city on the list was Portland, ME at #2. Only Boulder, CO was ranked higher. (BI)
