1. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed a controversial anti-abortion bill into law on Wednesday. The law allows exceptions “to avoid a serious health risk to the unborn child’s mother.” Democrats re-introduced an amendment to exempt rape and incest victims, but the motion failed on an 11-21 vote. 2. Dozens of students protested staffing cuts yesterday at Thornton Academy. Thornton Academy says it had to eliminate a part-time instructor, and seven non-teaching positions, because of a decline of more than 130 students this year and next year. (WGME)

3. Greater Portland Metro plans to raise the price for a single ride bus fair by 50 cents, to $2, and eliminate tickets and monthly passes in favor of smart cards and a phone app. Riders will still be able to pay with cash. The changes are expected to increase fare revenue by $300,000 to about $2.7 million in 2020, Metro said. (Press Herald)

4. For the third time in five years, a Massachusetts couple has won $1 million through a lottery jackpot. Janet Phillip bought the winning $30 Diamond Millions scratch-off ticket from an A&A Petro store, which has also been awarded a $10,000 bonus for its sale of the ticket. The woman’s husband already won $1 million through Massachussetts State Lottery scratch-off tickets in April 2014 and September 2016. The couple plan to use the money to help friends and family.
