1. Several more dead seals washed ashore Tuesday in York County, adding to an unusual die-off that has local and federal experts searching for an explanation. So far this month, 84 harbor seals have been found dead or stranded on southern Maine beaches, far outpacing the 10-year average of 38 strandings in the entire month of August. Marine mammal experts say people should report any dead or stranded seals spotted on beaches, but should stay at least 100 yards away and make sure dogs don’t go near the animals. (PressHerald)

2. Portland’s Deputy Fire Chief John Everett said an underground Central Maine Power Co. transmission line that feeds power into the Old Port blew up around 4:20 p.m. The force of the explosion, which occurred inside an underground electrical vault, blew a manhole cover into the street, but Everett said no injuries were reported. The more than 300 Central Maine Power customers in the neighborhood who lost power after the incident had their electrical service restored by 6:30 p.m. (PressHerald)

3. The owners of Bolley’s Famous Franks in Waterville say customers have threatened to fight them and have them fearing for their family’s safety all because they made the switch from crinkle-cut to straight-cut french fries. Recently, the outrage about the change made by owners Leslie and Jim Parsons has escalated. Jim Parsons said a man came in earlier this month, angry about the change, and ended up threatening to fight him when he was kicked out for becoming disorderly around customers. (PressHerald)

4. Hockey will be returning to the ice in Portland this fall. The Maine Mariners kick off their inaugural season at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland on October 13. The franchise has announced their mascot, Beacon the puffin.
