Earlier this week (June 25) Kim Kardashian West announced the launch of her new shapewear line, Kimono Solutionwear, however, not everyone is happy with the name choice. The reality star, makeup mogul, and future lawyer received backlash on social media from people who are against the name of the shapewear line because it is appropriation of the traditional Japanese kimono.

Kim Kardashian West took on to social media to launch the new line of shapewear, which comes in various sizes and skin tones.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js According to Billboard“some Japanese critics on social media said the name, which West trademarked, is an inappropriate take on centuries-old kimono clothing.” People who disapprove of the name Mrs. West has decided to use for her new shapewear line have been using the #KimOhNo. CNN reports, “originating in the Hakuhō (Early Nara) period (645-710), the kimono is an ankle-length gown with long, wide sleeves and a V- neck. With neither ties nor buttons, it is tied left over right across the chest and secured at the waist with a broad sash called an an obi.”

Amongst those who are upset with the naming of this product is San Francisco-based Yuka Ohishi, who told CNN, “I was not very pleased by companies using the word kimono to market beach cover-ups and robes. And then Kim Kardashian went to a whole new level by simply using the word as a pun. Her line is not at all inspired by the Japanese kimono, pays no respect.”

Yikes! Looks like Kim Kardashian West has some apologizing to do. Mrs. West and her team have yet to comment on the controversy.
