Major League Baseball has yanked the 2021 All-Star Game from the Atlanta metro area. The move was in response to Georgia’s new controversial voting law that many feel disenfranchised people of color. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said, “I have decided that the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport is by relocating this year’s All-Star Game and MLB Draft. Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box.” Cobb County, where the Atlanta Braves play and Truist Park is located, stands to lose an estimated $100 million because of the move. Voting rights activist and Georgia’s own Stacey Abrams said, “Like many Georgians, I am disappointed that MLB is relocating its All-Star game; however, I commend the players, owners, and league commissioner for speaking out. I urge others in positions of leadership to do so as well.” Georgia governor Brian Kemp blasted the decision saying, “Secure, accessible elections are worth the threats. They are worth the boycotts as well as the lawsuits. I want to be clear — I will not be backing down from this fight. What are they going to do if the Braves get in the playoffs? Are they going to move the damn playoff game? Are they going to move it to other states with more restrictions than we have?”
