1. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland will hold a special Mass this week honoring Pope Francis, who died Monday at age 88. Bishop James Ruggieri will lead the Mass for the repose of the Pope’s soul Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. (WMTW)
2. Newport native and former Nokomis High star Cooper Flagg has declared for the NBA Draft. The 18-year-old announced on Instagram he’s leaving Duke after a sensational freshman season and is projected to be the number one overall pick. He’s set to become the first player born and raised in Maine to be taken in the first round. (PH)
3. At the 129th Boston Marathon, Kenya’s John Korir took the men’s professional title with a time of 2:04:45. Sharon Lokedi, also from Kenya, shattered the women’s course record by 2.5 minutes, finishing in 2:17:22. Gorham’s Ryan Jara was the top Mainer, placing 70th overall with a time of 2:22:48. (WMTW)
4. There’s a push in Portland to ban cell phones during the school day for high schoolers. Right now, students can use phones between classes and at lunch. A new policy advanced by the district’s Curriculum and Policy Committee would have schools collect phones at the start of the day and return them at the end. Educators say phones have become a major distraction. The proposal now heads to the full school board for a vote. (WGME)
