1. A crowd gathered Sunday night in Mechanic Falls for a candlelight vigil for 7-year-old Hope West and 11-year-old Harmony West. The two girls were found dead alongside their mother in an apartment last weekend. (WGME)
2. A new 72-hour waiting period law takes effect in Maine on Friday, requiring those who purchase a gun to wait three days before taking it home. The bill was passed in the wake of the Lewiston mass shooting in October 2023, which left 18 dead and 13 injured.
3. A dead whale found off the coast of Wells on Friday has washed up on an island just off the coast of Kennebunk. The Center for Coastal Studies has identified the whale as an adult female humpback known as Lollipop. She became the third dead whale seen in Maine waters in three months. (WGME)
4. A Manchester, New Hampshire woman, Toni Pappa, was shocked after discovering 52 baseball cards from the late 1930s and early 40s while she was restoring her old barn house. One of the cards was a Ted Williams rookie card. The cards could be worth tens of thousands of dollars. (WMTW)
5. It was a busy Sunday for Team USA at the Summer Olympics in Paris. Noah Lyles inched out a win in the men’s 100m final to capture the gold medal. Scottie Scheffler won a gold medal in the men’s golf tournament. In swimming, Bobby Finke won gold in the 1500m Freestyle, and the women’s 4x100m medley team also won gold. America won silver in the men’s 4x100m medley relay. In cycling, Kristen Faulkner captured the gold medal in the women’s road race. Gymnast Suni Lee added to her Olympic total by winning bronze in the women’s uneven bars. As of Monday morning, Team USA leads the total medal count with 71, outpacing China’s 45.
