1. A Texas woman pleaded guilty in federal court in Portland to bank fraud, identity theft, and using a fake passport. Prosecutors say Andrea Cochran used a falsified passport card to withdraw more than $19,000 from a victim’s accounts at Cumberland County Credit Union branches in Westbrook and Portland. She was arrested in Windham and now faces up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine. (WMTW)
2. A Maine Legends soccer player has been detained by ICE. Malunda Destino, a starting defender from Angola, was taken into custody last week in Scarborough. His coach says the detainment has shaken the team and Lewiston soccer community. A GoFundMe has been set up to help with legal fees and support Destino’s pregnant girlfriend. He’s currently being held in Massachusetts. (WGME)
3. The Maine Turnpike Authority expects traffic to rise about 1.5% this Labor Day weekend, with more than 1.1 million toll transactions anticipated. Friday will be the busiest day, with peak northbound travel from 2 to 7 p.m. Drivers are reminded to follow speed limits in work zones, and Miles the Moose will greet travelers at the Kennebunk service plaza Friday afternoon.
