1. The 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, passed away on Sunday. He was 100 years old. Carter became the oldest living former president when he surpassed the record held by the late George H.W. Bush in March 2019. (USAToday) Sportscaster, Greg Gumbel, has died at the age of 78 after a battle with cancer. In his career spanning over 50 years, Gumble called two Super Bowls, becoming the first Black broadcaster to do play-by-play of a major U.S. championship game. He also did play-by-play for the NFL, MLB, and college basketball and served as the long-time host of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, March Madness. (USAToday) Charles Dolan, the founder of HBO and Cablevision, died on Saturday at the age of 98. Dolan also owned a company that controlled stakes in Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, the New York Knicks, and the New York Rangers. (CNN)
2. Maine’s minimum wage will get a boost on Jan. 1. It will increase from $14.15 to $14.65 as contributions to the state’s new paid family and medical leave program also kick in. Portland and Rockland, which have their own minimum wage ordinances, will also see hourly increases from $15 to $15.50. (PH)
3. Officials are urging people to install Carbon Monoxide detectors in their home after tragic deaths in NH. On Christmas Day, authorities in Wakefield, New Hampshire found four people dead in a home. Their suspected cause of death is carbon monoxide poisoning. (WGME)
4. South Portland bus services merged with Greater Portland METRO. Three South Portland bus routes – 21, 24A, and 24B — are now being overseen by Greater Portland METRO. The groups believe the merger will be a major financial aid for the transit system. (WMTW)
5. UMaine men’s hockey lost to Bentley, 4-2, on Sunday in front of a sold out crowd at the Cross Insurance Arena. It was the first loss since Nov. 10 for the Black Bears. Next weekend, defending national champion Denver comes to Orono for a pair of games at Alfond Arena. (PH)
