1. Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with last week’s murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The suspect is 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione. Mangione was ID’ed by a McDonald’s employee in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Altoona police also found a gun that was similar to the one used in the shooting. (ABC)
2. TikTok is facing a ban in the U.S. on January 19th unless Chinese parent company ByteDance divests and finds an American buyer. ByteDance has filed an appeal to temporarily block the ruling in order to have the Supreme Court review the case. If the ban goes in place, nearly 170 million monthly users will lose access to TikTok. (Reuters)
3. Lyme disease cases again set a new record in Maine this year with over 3,000 and counting being reported. Much of the increase in recent years has come from the Midcoast and Down East. (PH)
4. The southbound lanes of the Casco Bay Bridge are expected to be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today while the repair work is done. A pickup truck with a plow hitched on to the front slammed into the safety arm. (WGME)
5. Juan Soto has reportedly signed the largest deal in professional sports history. ESPN reports it’s a 15-year deal with the New York Mets worth $765 million. As part of the deal, sources say he has an “opt-out after five years and no deferred money,” plus, it “has escalators that can reach above $800 million.” He’s a four-time All-Star, a World Series champion, and a five-time Silver Slugger Award recipient.
