1. Three people — including two teenagers — were seriously injured in a head-on crash Monday morning (before the snow started) on Route 26 in Poland. Deputies say an SUV crossed the center line and hit another vehicle. All were taken to Central Maine Medical Center. The crash remains under investigation. (NCM)
2. A powerful Northeast blizzard battered Maine’s coastline Monday, bringing 50-plus mile-per-hour wind gusts and whiteout conditions from Portland to Rockland and Kittery. While Maine avoided the two-foot totals seen in Massachusetts and New York, coastal communities still saw several inches of snow, scattered outages, and dangerous travel conditions. (PH)
More snow is on the way Wednesday, with a weak system bringing 2 to 4 inches along the coast and lighter amounts inland.
3. Most of Maine’s congressional delegation will skip President Donald Trump’s State of the Union. Angus King says he “cannot in good conscience participate.” Chellie Pingree and Jared Golden also won’t attend, leaving Susan Collins as the only one expected there in person. (WMTW)
4. The Portland City Council has extended its moratorium on large music venues for six months, as it considers a proposal to increase the required buffer between venues from 100 feet to 750 feet. That change could effectively block the planned 3,300-seat Live Nation concert hall in downtown Portland. (PH)
5. Midcoast Maine photographer Lynne of Backyard Wildlife Maine hauled a roadkill deer in her brand-new SUV into the woods of Lincoln County to capture coyotes on trail cam — but instead, she attracted two rare, endangered golden eagles. State biologists confirmed the sightings, now aiding Maine’s golden eagle research project. (BDN)
