1. Activists across the U.S. are organizing a “nationwide day of no school, no work, and no shopping” this Friday, January 30th. The strike is a direct protest against the President’s recent immigration crackdown. Organizers say the goal is to stop what they call a “reign of terror” by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. 2. ICE agents in Portland, shattered the driver’s side window of a car to arrest a 38-year-old asylum seeker, and glass sprayed over the baby’s car seat, covering the inside of the vehicle where a 1-month-old infant and the baby’s mother were left alone before bystanders helped them out and warm up. Nene Barry said her husband was taken away despite no known criminal history, and ICE has not explained why the window was broken while the baby was inside. Maine’s Attorney General says his office has already identified 14 credible complaints about excessive force from federal agents during the immigration enforcement surge. (PH)
3. Susan Collins announced that “enhanced” ICE enforcement operations in Maine have ended. She said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem informed her there are no ongoing or planned large-scale ICE actions in the state, though routine ICE and Border Patrol work will continue. (PH)
4. The wreckage of the Bombardier Challenger 600 at Bangor International Airport remains on the tarmac, encased in snow, ice, and firefighting foam, with the remains of those killed still trapped in the wreckage as of Wednesday. As investigators continue their work, the airport is scheduled to reopen today at noon, though severe weather could delay that. (WGME)
5. Eight students from UNE’s College of Business are heading to California to work with the NFL during Super Bowl weekend. The students will take on interactive, guest-facing roles while earning hands-on experience in sports marketing and business. While in the Bay Area, the students will also meet with executives from the San Francisco Giants, San Jose Earthquakes, and San Jose Sharks to learn more about business strategies. (WGME)
