1. Police have identified one of the two suspects accused of a carjacking Friday night in South Portland. South Portland police issued arrest warrants for two suspects who appear to have escaped from juvenile detention at Long Creek. Davyn Flynn, 18, of Portland, is now charged with robbery, criminal threatening, terrorizing and assault. Police also filed the same charges against an unnamed 16-year-old boy. (WMTW)
2. The federal government is cracking down on illegal marijuana grow houses after a leaked federal government memo from August said there are up to 270 large-scale illegal grows in Maine connected to Chinese organized crime. Rumford police noticed the smell of unburnt marijuana around a property in Mexico that contained a two-story garage with a ventilation system that was actively in use. The property was across from a day care and 950 feet from a middle school, court records noted. (BDN)
3. The US leads the Olympic medal count as of early this morning with 20 overall. Japan has the most gold medals with 6. The US currently has 3 gold medals, with 2 for swimming and 1 for fencing. The United States Men’s Gymnastics team captured the Bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. After waiting through five rotations of Monday’s team final — nearly three hours — Stephen Nedoroscik’s (of Worcester, MA) performance on his specialty event provided the final push to clinch a bronze medal for the United States, giving the team their first medal since 2008. 4. Nearing 15 years since its last paint job, Bangor’s Paul Bunyan statue is showing its years. The city has set aside $15,000 to give the statue a needed facelift as well as add five informational kiosks. The new plaques will inform visitors of the history of the statue, the legends of Bunyan, and Bangor’s history as the logging capital of the world. (NCM)
