1. An Air India flight crashed after takeoff Thursday, killing at least 290 people. The Boeing 787 was headed to London with 242 aboard when it slammed into a medical college. One man survived. Miracle in seat 11A, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, is being treated at a local hospital for non critical injuries and could be released in the next couple of days. (CBS)
2. The Maine Senate has rejected a bill that would ban transgender athletes from girls’ sports and restrict bathroom access. It’s one of eight GOP-backed transgender-related bills under review. A second bill on gender-affirming care was also added to the Senate’s agenda. (WMTW)
3. The historic Congress Street building that houses Portland’s iconic State Theatre is up for sale. The six-story property—home to over 120 tenants—has a $10.9 million price tag. Built in 1929, the 1,900-seat theater is still hosting major shows. (PH)
4. Thousands of Mainers are getting replacement license plates due to a spacing error. About 3,600 new pine tree plates have misprinted numbers and letters. The state says replacements are coming at no cost, and EZ-Pass readers will still work fine. (WGME)
5. The Patriots will unveil a statue of Tom Brady outside Gillette Stadium on August 8th before their preseason opener. Brady, the first player to get a statue at Gillette, was honored in a video Thursday featuring career highlights and his Patriots Hall of Fame induction. (TMZ)
