2. A new study published in the Earth’s Future Journal found that New York City is sinking under the weight of its skyscrapers. At the time of the study, New York’s 1,084,954 buildings weighed an estimated 1.68 trillion pounds. 3. Abbott Laboratories, one of the country’s largest producers of COVID-19 test kits, on Tuesday said it has laid off 199 workers at its Westbrook manufacturing facility. The job cut brings the number of Maine-based Abbott employees who have lost their positions over the past two years to more than 800. (PH)

4. Portland voters will consider rent control on the June ballot. Landlords petitioned for the referendum in order to repeal a rule imposed in 2020 that limits rent increases between tenants to 5%. They say it made it nearly impossible for landlords who renovate and upgrade a vacant property to pay for that by charging a new tenant market rent. (WMTW)
