5TYNTK November 10 – Shutdown Progress, Airport Chaos, Average Winter, Hearts of Pine, Mega Millions

1. The Senate has taken its first step toward ending the month-long government shutdown, voting 60–40 to advance a bipartisan funding bill. The deal, led by moderate Democrats and Independent Sen. Angus King, would reopen the government through January and guarantee back pay for federal workers. It doesn’t yet extend Affordable Care Act tax credits — a key Democratic demand — but includes a promise for a December vote on that issue. (WMTW)

2. Airline passengers faced major headaches Sunday as thousands of flights were canceled or delayed. By 10 p.m., more than 2,200 flights were canceled and 7,200 delayed. The government shutdown has led to critical staffing shortages at 40 major U.S. airports, cutting air traffic. (NBC)

3. Maine’s winter forecast is looking pretty average this year. The National Weather Service says temperatures should be near normal, with precipitation slightly below average. Meteorologists say that’s due to a La Niña pattern, which can bring drier conditions. (PH)

4. Portland’s Hearts of Pine won’t advance to the USL League One title match after a heartbreaking 6-5 loss in penalty kicks to Spokane Velocity. The semifinal ended an incredible first season for Maine’s new pro soccer team, which sold out every home game and earned a loyal fan base. The team says they’ll be back stronger next season. (WMTW)

5. The Mega Millions jackpot is estimated to be worth $900 million for  Tuesday’s drawing. The non-anuity cash payout is $415.3 million. No one has won the big Mega Millions prize since June 27, 2025. It’s the longest stretch without a jackpot winner since the game began in 2002. (ABC)
