1. President-elect Donald Trump has tapped Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to head a new government agency focused on regulating federal spending. In a statement released Tuesday, Trump referred to the new agency as the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE). The two entrepreneurs will be tasked with paving the way for Trump’s administration “to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies – Essential to the ‘Save America’ Movement,” Trump said in a statement. “Their work will conclude no later than July 4, 2026 – A smaller Government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift to America on the 250th Anniversary of The Declaration of Independence. I am confident they will succeed,” he concluded. (RS)
2. There is still no winner in the race for Maine’s Second Congressional District. A ranked choice count is now underway to determine a winner. In the first round of counting, incumbent Democratic Congressman Jared Golden had a slim 700 vote lead over his Republican challenger Austin Theriault. (WGME)
3. The Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance Company building on Commercial Street put decals on parts of its six-story building after being approached by the Maine Audubon. The Audubon told them birds were flying into windows there at a higher rate than other places. (WGME)
