1. A newly released “birthday book” for Jeffrey Epstein includes a 2003 letter believed to be from former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell of Maine. In it, Mitchell called Epstein a “good friend” and praised his varied life. The note is far tamer than other lewd or suggestive entries, including one allegedly signed by Donald Trump. Mitchell denies knowing about Epstein’s crimes. (PH)
2. Portland police will soon open a new community office at 443 Congress Street, steps from Monument Square. The move comes after safety and cleanliness concerns in the area. Officials say the office, staffed by a civilian coordinator, will give residents and businesses a direct way to raise issues. It’s set to open later this month. (NCM)
3. High-speed internet has finally reached Vienna, Maine. The Kennebec County town of 600 just connected its first broadband customers after years of relying on dial-up and DSL. More than half the households signed up, and officials say the service will be a game-changer for students, families, and small businesses. (WGME)
4. Portland chef Jordan Rubin of Mr. Tuna has been named one of Food & Wine’s 10 Best New Chefs for 2025, the first Maine chef honored in over a decade. Rubin will be featured in the magazine’s October issue. (PH)
