1. Multiple wind-swept wildfires continue to rage in the Los Angeles area. Over 150,000 people have been ordered to evacuate. At least five people have lost their lives due to the fires. The Palisades fire destroyed over 1,000 structures, with over 15,800 acres burned between Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades. The Palisades fire is expected to be the costliest wildfire in history. 3. A Superior Court Justice ruled Maine is denying the constitutional rights of hundreds of defendants statewide. Many people facing serious criminal charges haven’t received the court-appointed lawyer they are entitled to under the Constitution. (PH)
4. The Portland Hearts of Pine signed Khalid Hersi as the first Mainer on its roster. The former Lewiston star helped guide the Lewiston High School soccer team to the 2019 state final and later played for the University of Southern Maine. Signing Hersi is “a proud moment for our club and our mission to uplift the local community,” Hearts of Pine coach Bobby Murphy said in a written statement. (PH)
