Talk about going out with a bang—The Nite Show with Danny Cashman just pulled off one of the biggest surprises in Maine TV history: a guest appearance by the David Letterman himself!
For 15 years, Danny Cashman has been keeping late-night TV alive in Maine with his independently produced talk show, which airs on Saturdays across Portland, Bangor, and Presque Isle. He’s been the writer, the host, the behind-the-scenes magic-maker—holding it down without the backing of a major network. But even with the show wrapping up this season, he had one dream left: to welcome his hero to the stage!
At a recent taping at Husson University’s Gracie Theater, the audience had no clue what was about to happen. Midway through taping what will be one of the final episodes, Cashman casually introduced “David Letterman,” and the crowd erupted!
For Cashman, this was more than just a big-name guest. Letterman was the reason he got into TV in the first place. Watching him step out on that Maine stage was personal, emotional, and as he admitted, a little overwhelming. “I got weak in the knees,” he said afterward.
Letterman, ever the legend, was both hilarious and heartfelt. He gave Cashman major props for keeping The Nite Show alive all these years in a world that’s moved away from local programming. “This is so reminiscent of what we had at the Ed Sullivan Theater,” he said, calling the show a “fantastic operation.”
