Today for If You Can Hear Her, You Can Be Her, I spoke with Rebecca Williams, the state director of Best Buddies in Maine!
Best Buddies is an organization dedicated to creating opportunities for friendship, leadership, and inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Rebecca shared how her connection to the mission began with her nieces, who have Down syndrome, inspiring her to bring the Best Buddies program to Maine.
Rebecca started her journey with Best Buddies in Maine in 2020. Since then, the program has grown significantly across the state and now impacts more than 19,000 Mainers each year through its inclusion-focused initiatives!
She also highlighted upcoming community events that support the organization’s mission, including two Best Buddies Friendship Walks scheduled for Bangor on April 26th and Portland on May 3rd. These events help raise awareness while bringing people together to celebrate inclusion.
Rebecca emphasized the importance of passion, volunteerism, and community involvement. Her message to young people is to discover their unique gifts and use them to make a positive impact!
