5TYNTK August 7 – Nurse Released From ICE, I-295 Death Investigation, Peaks Island Burglaries, Heat Advisory Today, Dollar Homes For Sale

1. The Maine Medical Center nurse detained by ICE last week has been released and is on her way back to Maine. She spent about a week in ICE custody after being detained at Boston Logan Airport. Her nurses’ union says she’s legally authorized to live and work in the U.S. while her asylum case is pending, while DHS says her previous visa had expired. Her coworkers rallied for her release outside Maine Med on Wednesday. (WMTW)

2. Portland police are investigating the suspicious death of a 21-year-old found injured along I-295 near Tukey’s Bridge Wednesday night. The victim was discovered in the breakdown lane near Exit 8 and later died at Maine Medical Center. Police say a suspect is in custody and there’s no danger to the public. The investigation shut down the southbound on-ramp at Washington Avenue overnight, but it has since reopened. (WMTW)

3. Portland police are investigating a pair of overnight burglaries on Peaks Island, including one where three people entered a home while the family was sleeping. The homeowners woke up, realized there were intruders and chased them out, and police believe the same suspects may have broken into another nearby home that night. Burglaries are extremely rare on Peaks Island, police say the last one on record was back in 2020. (PH)

4. A heat advisory is in effect for coastal and central Maine today as we head into the muggiest day of the week. Temperatures are running about 10 degrees above normal, and with the humidity, it could feel like the mid to upper 90s this afternoon. The advisory runs from 11 this morning until 8 tonight, with hot and humid conditions sticking around through the weekend. (WMTW)

5. Bath Iron Works is selling two homes in Bath for just one dollar each — but there’s a pretty big catch. The buyer has to pay to relocate the homes, including the historic Deering House, to a new legal site by November of 2027 and cover everything from moving and permits to a new foundation and utilities. BIW also wants proof that whoever buys them actually has the money and a qualified plan to pull off the move. (WGME)
