1. Senator Susan Collins and Democratic challenger Troy Jackson faced off in their first televised debate Tuesday night. The two clashed over the cost of living, President Trump, healthcare and recent corruption allegations involving both candidates. It was the first of four debates scheduled over the next two weeks. 2. Central Maine Medical Center is denying a union’s claim that a nurse fired during a recent organizing effort has been reinstated. CMMC says none of the 14 nurses fired or six disciplined have been reinstated, and says its actions were based on policy and patient-safety violations. Nurses at the Lewiston hospital recently voted 91% in favor of unionizing. (WGME)
3. An Ogunquit family’s fight to keep giant tin roosters in their yard could be heading to court. The LeBlancs say the six-foot-tall roosters comfort their 6-year-old daughter, Pyper, who has autism, while the town considers them illegal signage for the family’s restaurant. The family has been fined nearly $2,000, and a national nonprofit law firm is now demanding the town drop the fines. (WGME)
4. Mount Washington has recorded its first measurable snowfall of the season, picking up seven-tenths of an inch Tuesday morning. That’s a late start, the summit typically reaches at least a half-inch of snow by September 30th. The mountain also saw heavy icing and a wind gust of 110 miles per hour. (WGME)
5. That infamous rock outside the Dunkin’ on Main Street in Bangor has finally been moved after being hit by dozens of drivers. The property owner moved it about two feet from its original spot and plans to install a concrete bollard to protect the rock and curb. The rock had become such a local celebrity that Dunkin’ even held a goodbye promotion for it last week. (NCM)
