2. Immigration proved to be a major boiling point at last night’s Republican debate, where presidential candidates Jeb Bush and John Kasich criticized Donald Trump’s aggressive plan to deport unauthorized immigrants. After Trump defended his plan to build a wall along the Mexican border and to identify and deport some 11 million people, Kasich responded by telling the audience to “think about the families; think about the children.” He also described Trump’s “ship them back” approach as a “silly argument” and “not adult.” Later, Bush warned that Trump’s harsh proposals would drive Hispanic voters to support the Democrats. “They’re doing high-fives in the Clinton campaign right now when they hear this,” he declared.
3. Isn’t Gaga so on fleek in this season of AHS? Yaaas; I mean, kk. These are both slang expressions that, as of yesterday, are included among Dictionary.com’s linguistically acceptable synonyms for “yes” or “okay” IRL (in real life). Several terms similarly drawn from the lexicon of texting and social media also made the online dictionary’s list of recent additions. Below are some highlights:
- bestie: Informal. a person’s best friend.
- doge: an Internet fad or meme typified by an image of a dog of the Shiba Inu breed accompanied by very short phrases that humorously represent the dog’s imagined thoughts and use the wrong modifiers or shortened word forms, as “such dignified” or “amaze.”
- drunk text: to send a text message to someone while intoxicated.
- EGOT: the honor of winning at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony in competitive rather than honorary categories.
- facepalm: the gesture of placing the palm of one’s hand across the face, as to express embarrassment, frustration, disbelief, etc. (often used as an interjection).
- fleek: Slang. flawlessly styled, groomed, etc.
- IRL: in real life (in contrast with communication and interaction online or in a fictional situation).
- kk: Informal. (used in text messages and other digital communications) okay; OK.
- Mx.: a title of respect prefixed to a person’s surname: unlike Mr., Mrs., or Ms., it does not indicate gender and may be used by a person with any or no specific gender identity.
- random: Slang. a person or thing that is unknown, unidentified, or suspiciously out of place.
- sapiosexual: a person who finds intelligence to be a sexually attractive quality in others.
- TBH: to be honest.
- yaaas: Slang for Yes!
4. Groupon is currently selling clip-in man buns for just $9.99. USA Today reports that the buns are valued at $65.34 and are targeted for the “man who wears many hats, but no bun.” You can purchase them in shades of black, brown or blonde artificial hair. “This attachable–and, equally important, detachable–man bun lets you blend in with your surroundings,” the ad reads, “putting it on when you smell the fair-trade coffee or hear a banjo, and taking it off when someone utters the word bro.”
5. Target is facing a bit of controversy over a new sweater they are selling which reads “OCD: Obsessive Christmas Disorder.” While some say, why is this offensive? Others see it poking fun or making light of people who actually suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. What are your thoughts?
