1. Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico on Wednesay, completely knocking out power, causing heavy flooding, breaking windows, and ripping off roofs with winds reaching 155 miles per hour. The island’s energy grid took such a severe hit that restoring power to everyone could take months. It’s too early to tell what impact the storm might have on Florida and other Atlantic coast states, although early projections show it drifting east of shore. (CNN)

2. President Donald Trump mistakenly referred to the African nation of Namibia as Nambia not once, but twice during his speech to African leaders at the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday. Twitter users were quick to mock Trump for his mistake on Twitter and #Nambia soon began trending. Trump also sparked controversy during his speech when he congratulated the African leaders on the “business potential” of their countries by telling them, “I have so many friends going to your countries trying to get rich.” (People)

3. Tropical Storm Jose has strengthened slightly as it sits south of New England. In Maine, the biggest impact will be heavy surf with waves building as high as 10 feet. A high surf advisory is in effect for the coast until 8 a.m. Friday. Dangerous rip currents and beach erosion will be an issue up and down the coastline. Acadia National Park has issued a warning to visitors to keep an eye out for high surf and dangerous waves. (WMTW)

4. Proposed adult-use cannabis regulations from the Legislature’s marijuana committee would allow licensed retail stores to sell pot from drive-up windows and over the internet. Like any other recreational marijuana consumer, drive-up and online customers would have to show identification to the window or delivery employee to prove they are at least 21 years old. The committee’s bill, which sets up the regulatory framework for commercial cannabis cultivation, manufacturing and sales, will be the subject of a public hearing Tuesday. If the committee approves it, the full Legislature will likely consider it next month. (PH)

5. Personal finance site GoBankingRates.com released a list of the highest paying career path in each state in America. “Every state in America has a medical professional at the top of the income pyramid,” the report concluded. Maine: Surgeon · Salary: $271,570 (Moneyish)
