1. Firefighters made a gruesome discovery as two bodies came into view while they dealt with a burning truck in Bangor. Police said they are working to identify the victims and did not yet have information to share. (NCM)
2. South Portland police are looking for a burglar who broke into eight businesses in the Maine Mall area early Sunday morning. The break-ins do not appear related to a spate of armed robberies of businesses in Greater Portland over the last eight days. After reviewing surveillance footage, police said Wednesday there is a single suspect for all the break-ins and the department released photos taken from surveillance cameras at some of the businesses. Police said they were withholding the names of the businesses because they are in the process of repairing damage and upgrading security systems. (PH)
3. Jaylen Brown’s 3-pointer with 0.3 seconds left gave the Celtics a 97-94 victory Wednesday night over the Utah Jazz. With Kyrie Irving out after knee surgery, and Marcus Morris and Al Horford both sidelined with ankle injuries, the Celtics finished a 4-0 trip to the West in what would have been Gordon Hayward’s return to Utah had he not been injured in the season opener. The Celtics completed their 14th double-digit comeback this season, tied for second-most in the NBA. Boston now has made five go-ahead field goals in the final five seconds of a game this season, the most of any NBA team. (PH)
4. Cosmopolitan is defending itself after Walmart announced this week that it would no longer stock the magazine at the checkout aisles of its more than 5,000 stores. The retail chain made the decision after the National Center on Sexual Exploitation declared it inappropriate for a magazine to portray women as sex objects in the #MeToo era. Cosmo defended itself on Wednesday by telling BuzzFeed, “With our focus on empowerment, we are proud of all that the brand has achieved for women around the world in the areas of equality, health, relationships, career, politics and social issues.” Meanwhile, many Twitter users questioned whether Walmart had its priorities straight. “Walmart removed Cosmopolitan? I’d be more impressed if they hired full-time employees instead of two part-time employees just so they don’t have to pay benefits,” one wrote. “Also, your in-house pizza sucks.” Another critic wrote, “Me Too is about harassment, not sex, and certainly not women enjoying sex. Everything is being thrown into the panic blender.” (BF)
