1. On Sunday, a gunman cut through a fence to avoid security and opened fire at Northern California’s popular Gilroy Garlic Festival, killing three and wounding at least 15 before police fatally shot him as terrified people and performers ran for cover. Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said the gunman was armed with a rifle and randomly targeted people when he opened fire. Some witnesses reported a second suspect and a manhunt continues for that suspect. (Press Herald)
2. David Ortiz has been released from the hospital almost seven weeks after he was shot in the Dominican Republic, the Red Sox confirmed. ESPN reported that at home he will be assisted by full-time nurses and will be visited regularly by his personal doctor. Ortiz will be staying in the Boston area as he continues to recover and The Red Sox plan to give an update on his condition “early next week.” (WGME)
3. Hundreds gathered in Deering Oaks Park on Saturday to celebrate Portland’s annual Festival of Nations.The event showcases the different nationalities that make up Maine. Those involved say the 17th annual festival was particularly special as the city welcomes asylum seekers. The event included dozens of vendors and craft booths from across New England and there are already plans in the works for the 2020 festival. (WGME)
4. Fortnite has wrapped its first-ever massive sporting event in New York’s Arthur Ashe tennis stadium. Beating out other pros and famous streamers, Kyle ‘Bugha’ Giersdorf, 16, made a name for himself by dominating from the first round and ultimately taking home the $3 million grand prize for individual players. That’s the largest-ever payout for a single player in an esports tournament. (CNN)
