1. AstraZeneca put a hold on its Covid vaccine clinical trials worldwide after a U.K. trial participant had an adverse reaction. It was considered among the most advanced vaccines in development. “This is a routine action which has to happen whenever there is a potentially unexplained illness in one of the trials, while it is investigated, ensuring we maintain the integrity of the trials,” the company said.
2. The U.S. tops 6.3 million coronavirus cases with over 189,000 related deaths. The Maine CDC reported 12 new cases on Tuesday. No new deaths have been reported since Friday. Maine’s death toll is 134 w/ 469 active cases. The Maine CDC is investigating outbreaks at the Lafayette Club and American Legion in Sanford.
3. Students in Westbrook were supposed to be going back to school yesterday under a hybrid model. But the superintendent pushed back the start date to September 14th due to lack of teachers and substitutes.
4. The president of the University of New Hampshire has publicly condemned a party at a fraternity house, which led to a COVID-19 outbreak. More than 100 people attended a party at the Theta Chi fraternity house. They say so far, 11 positive COVID cases have been traced back to that party.
5. The State of Maine issued the first active licenses for adult-use marijuana on Tuesday, nearly four years after voters legalized it. Retail sales are set to start on October 9. The Office of Marijuana Policy announced it has issued six active licenses: three to cultivation facilities, two to stores, and one to a testing facility.
