1. The Lewiston School Committee will “encourage” mask wearing for anyone who isn’t vaccinated, but not require it. Portland’s superintendent is calling for universal mask wearing. Masks will not be required outdoors.
2. The Portland Hunt and Alpine Club and Little Giant have announced guests must now be vaccinated to dine inside. While many applauded the move others criticized it and one person even called for a boycott.
3. The NFL is mandating COVID-19 vaccines for all employees. Employees have until September 6th to get vaccinated. The NFL had already said that any team affected by a COVID outbreak during the season will be forced to forfeit affected games while also withholding checks for an outbreak among anyone unvaccinated. Unvaccinated players could also be fined over $14,000 every time they violate COVID-19 protocol.
4. Team USA basketball defeated Spain, one of the Tokyo Games’ top men’s teams, during the Olympics quarterfinals and will now advance to the semi-finals. USA basketball has a chance at medaling, playing the winner of Australia vs. Argentina today.
5. Simone Biles stuck the landing and won bronze today during the balance beam final. It’s her seventh career Olympic medal — tied with Shannon Miller for the most by an American in gymnastics.
