1. Around 8.9 million Americans began losing four different COVID jobless benefits on Labor Day. Another three million Americans will no longer receive the weekly $300 unemployment benefit, as well. The government has no current plans to extend the unemployment benefits. (CNBC)

2. President Biden approved major disaster declarations Monday greenlighting federal aid for people in New Jersey and New York affected by Hurricane Ida. At least 50 people were killed in six Eastern states as record rainfall last Wednesday overwhelmed rivers and sewer systems.

3. Mildred L. Day School elementary school in Arundel is moving to remote learning because 143 people were identified as close contacts of positive COVID-19 cases and need to quarantine. Students and staff are expected to return to the school on Sept. 13. (PRESS HERALD)

4. Back-to-school departures are forcing many restaurants and hotels to cut back on services or close their doors some days, so they don’t let quality slip and burn out the rest of their staff. The departures represent about a third of the restaurant’s front-of-house staff.

5. Miles the Moose with members of the Maine Turnpike Authority handed out Wicked Whoopies and bottles of Poland Spring Water to drivers heading south through the York toll plaza. After two decades, this year is Miles’ last run on the turnpike. The EZ-pass, high-speed tolls are expected to be set up soon. (WGME)
