1. Beloved actress, comedian and American icon Betty White passed at her home Friday morning. She’s believed to have died from natural causes. Betty had the longest running career for any woman in TV prior to her death — starring in multiple shows over the past 8 decades, starting in 1939. Betty is perhaps most famous for her lead role as Rose in The Golden Girls. Betty was 99 and she would have celebrated her 100th birthday on January 17.
2. The Maine CDC reported 340 Mainers are hospitalized with coronavirus and 119 are in critical care on Sunday. In critical care units nine out of 10 are unvaccinated. COVID-19 death rates are three times higher in Maine’s less vaccinated counties.
3. Starting Saturday workers in Portland must be paid a minimum of $19.50. If the state of emergency ends so will hazard pay. Portland city council meets Tuesday. Five votes from council are required to make a decision following public comment.
4. Portland’s iconic Porthole Restaurant is now under new ownership. The Upward Management Group plans to revitalize the restaurant, while keeping its classic charm. “Joe, Kevin, and John could not be more excited for the opportunity to run what has been an anchor of the Old Port since 1929.” Upward Management relaunched Three Dollar Deweys in 2019.
5. The 34th annual Maine Special Olympics Lobster Dip raised over $100,000. Nearly 400 people dipped into the, 45 degree Fahrenheit, Atlantic Ocean in OOB on Saturday. Participants were put into groups and sent into the frigid ocean every 15 minutes.
