1. The number of COVID-19 patients in Maine hospitals set yet another record at 436 people, an increase of 25 percent from two weeks ago. Maine is not seeing an increase in critical care patients, a sign that the omicron may be less severe for some.
2. The Supreme Court stopped a push by the Biden administration to mandate vaccines and testing at large businesses. The court is allowing the administration to proceed with a vaccine mandate for most health care workers.
3. A Maine company is being sued after a fire in New York that left 17 people dead over the weekend. A lawsuit has been filed against Portland-based L-I-H-C Investment Group, which is one of the owners of the Bronx building. The lawsuit claims negligence, in part, due to the self-closing doors which reportedly malfunctioned.
4. Navient has agreed to cancel $1.7 billion in debt owed by more than 66,000 borrowers across 39 states including Maine. Borrowers whose loans are canceled will receive notice from Navient along with refunds of any payments made after mid-2021.
