1. A mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois, terrorized the community’s 4th of July parade. Six people were killed, and at least 24 were injured during the incident. Police are calling the incident a “random act of violence.” Authorities recovered a high-powered rifle at the scene. Robert E. Crimo II was taken into custody Monday evening as a person of interest in the shooting.
2. Hundreds of pro-abortion rights protesters descended on the Eastern Prom in Portland prior to the city’s July Fourth fireworks in an effort to keep abortion rights top of mind, and to highlight what they believe is the loss of independence for women on Independence Day.
3. Black bears are wandering into residential areas in Maine and New Hampshire in search of their next meal. Lewiston Police reported several bear sightings last month. Even though black bear attacks are rare, game wardens advise you to stay inside and keep your distance.
4. Even a leg injury couldn’t slow down Joey Chestnut’s mouth. The competitive eater captured his 15th Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest title on the 4th of July. Chestnut took down 63 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes to win the title. Chestnut also had to deal with a protestor who stormed the stage in the middle of the event. In the women’s division, Miki Sudo reclaimed her Nathan’s title after taking a year off because of pregnancy. She ate 40 hot dogs.
