1. It’s Memorial Day weekend, considered by many to be the kickoff to summer. Memorial Day honors those who lost their lives while defending their country.

2. More than 1 million vehicles are anticipated to travel the Maine Turnpike from Friday through Monday during the unofficial first weekend of summer. Friday is anticipated to be the busiest of all four days system wide. (WGME)

3. Downtown workers say rules and time limits on Portland street parking create real hassles for them getting into work. f you’re heading out to eat, it’s no problem. But if you’re working a 10-hour shift at that restaurant, the clock runs out quickly. Parking in the city is divided up into different zones, and you can’t stay in one zone for long. Workers are drafting a proposal to create a sticker system. The idea is to give vehicle stickers to downtown employees for parking time-limit exemptions. That way, workers could park for longer than two hours. (WGME)

Cumberland’s Julia Gagnon, who rose to national fame on American Idol by reaching the top seven on this year’s season, will headline the music lineup for this summer’s 40th Annual Moxie Festival in Lisbon Falls. Gagnon is scheduled to perform at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 13 at MTM Community Center Park. (WMTW)

5. On Thursday, the NCAA said that colleges and universities can pay athletes. The NCAA will pay more than $2.7 billion in damages over 10 years to past and current athletes. Sources said the parties also have agreed to a revenue-sharing plan allowing each school to share up to roughly $20 million per year with its athletes. All Division I athletes dating back to 2016 are eligible to receive a share as part of the settlement class. The ruling comes as athletes have been able to make money from licensing deals for the past several years. (FTW)
