1. Quicksand startled a woman who suddenly sunk hip deep at Popham Beach on Saturday. Rangers at the state park are going to install warning signs telling beachgoers what to do if they step in supersaturated sand. Repeated scientific studies have shown that people cannot fully sink in quicksand because it’s denser than the human body, so the upper torso will remain buoyant at the surface. (PH)
2. The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning for teens and their parents concerning “sextortion scams.” It happens when an individual shares explicit photos with someone they think they can trust online, and then that person uses those photos as a form of blackmail. Police are also seeing more cases where actual photos are never shared, but rather artificial intelligence is used to create a realistic nude photo that is then used for blackmail. If you think you’ve been a victim of a sextortion scam, Police say block the person from social media, do not deactivate your account, keep any screenshots, and contact your local law enforcement. 3. Maine’s interlibrary loan system is currently on hold. Maine InfoNet, which coordinates the library systems statewide, says because of an issue with the contracting process for these deliveries, there will be a gap in service until there’s a new contract. (WGME)
4. A salmonella outbreak that has spread to 25 states, including Maine, could be linked to cucumbers. 162 have fallen ill while 54 have been hospitalized. Testing found salmonella in a Fresh Start Produce product sample. Cucumbers across 14 states have been recalled “but these sellers may have shipped to additional states or repackaged them for stores,” according to the CDC. (CBS)
