1. Basketball Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo has died. He was 58 years old. The NBA announced Mutombo passed away Monday from brain cancer. He died with his family at his side. Mutombo was a 7-foot-2 giant who was a shot-blocking menace for 18 NBA seasons. He was well known for his finger wag after blocking someone’s shot. Mutombo was an ambassador for the development of the Basketball Africa League. He was also a humanitarian involved in numerous charitable causes. (ESPN)
2. MLB legend Pete Rose has died at the age of 83. He passed away on Monday at his home in Las Vegas. The coroner will investigate to determine the cause and manner of death, but there are no signs of foul play., according to ABC News. No player in the 100+ year history of Major League Baseball had more hits than Pete, who accumulated an astounding 4,256 hits over his 24-season career. His legacy involves controversy. In 1989, he was banned from baseball after the league determined he’d bet on baseball. Pete denied it for years but ultimately admitted to it in the mid-2000s. (ESPN)
3. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz face off tonight in the only scheduled vice presidential debate before the November election. The debate starts at 9 p.m. ET and will run 90 minutes — the same length as the two presidential debates. Unlike the presidential debates, a candidate’s microphone will not be muted when their opponent is speaking, but CBS News reserves the right to turn off the microphones. (CBS)
4. What happened to the life-size moose replica at the Kennebunk rest area on I-95 north. It was damaged beyond repair by vandals last winter. It was removed and replaced with a smaller replica of the “Welcome to Maine” sign. (WGME)
