Today for If You Can Hear Her, You Can Be Her, I spoke with Clara Brown, a two-time Paralympian and professional cyclist who grew up in Falmouth!
Clara shared her powerful journey, which began after a spinal cord injury at the age of 12. What could have been a stopping point instead became the beginning of a new path – one that led her to competitive cycling and ultimately the world stage!
She has since built an impressive career, earning a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics and securing multiple world titles. Through it all, Clara emphasized the importance of resilience, perspective, and continuing to push forward even when faced with challenges.
Mentorship has played a key role in her journey. She highlighted the impact of her high school rowing coach, C.C. Stockly, as well as former national team coach Sarah Hammer, both of whom helped guide and support her along the way.
Outside of cycling, Clara is continuing to pursue new goals, including working toward her commercial pilot’s license, inspired by her stepmother. She shared that staying curious and open to new opportunities has been a major part of her growth!
Her advice to young women is to take chances and surround themselves with people who believe in them. She emphasized that having a strong support system can make all the difference when pursuing big goals.
