I got to chat with Maine Celtics guard Jay Scrubb about his inspiring basketball journey, the team’s supportive culture, and his vision for living a fulfilling life! Scrubb’s path to professional basketball was anything but ordinary. He didn’t begin playing seriously until his junior year of high school, but his dedication and talent propelled him to become the first JUCO player drafted into the NBA since 2004. Now with the Maine Celtics, Scrubb is thriving in an environment he describes as “selfless and supportive,” where teamwork takes center stage.
However, his road hasn’t been without challenges. After suffering a torn ACL, Scrubb leaned on the Boston Celtics organization and his community to come back stronger. Reflecting on that period, he shared a piece of advice for young players: “Keep pushing through the challenges. They’re what make you stronger.”
As for pre-game rituals? Scrubb prefers a consistent routine, accompanied by a mix of R&B and hip-hop to set the tone. Off the court, he’s been enjoying Maine’s local culture—particularly Yardie Ting, a Jamaican restaurant that reminds him of home!
Looking ahead, Scrubb is optimistic about the Maine Celtics’ potential this season and encourages fans to join the journey. He also shared a personal mantra: “Live a life that brings you happiness and fulfillment.” Check out our full interview below:
With his resilience and passion, Jay Scrubb is an inspiring figure both on and off the court. Be sure to catch him and the Maine Celtics in action this season!
