I got to sit down with coaches Justin and Zach from the Portland Flames, a unified Special Olympics team made up of athletes and Portland firefighters. Launched just eight months ago, the team is already making a big impact both on and off the field!
The Flames are currently focused on soccer, practicing every Monday and gearing up for a tournament on October 8th. But their mission goes far beyond the game – they’re building connection, inclusivity, and community support!
Right now, the Flames are in need of volunteers to assist during games, as well as funding to help cover costs for athletes, many of whom rely on Social Security or disability income. Donations also go toward extras like team duffel bags and equipment.
Volunteers don’t need prior experience, just a positive attitude and a willingness to help! If you’d like to get involved, you can find more information on the Portland Flames’ Facebook and Instagram pages. Also, feel free to reach out to coach Justin directly at Justin.greenlaw22@gmail.com or at (207) 252-4861.
