Slugger, the Portland Sea Dogs mascot, has been elected to the Mascot Hall of Fame. He becomes the first-ever minor league sports mascot to receive this honor. The induction ceremony will take place on August 12th in Whiting, Indiana.
Slugger joins Otto the Orange from Syracuse University as the only mascots selected for the Class of 2023. Fans voted for the deserving mascots from May 14 to May 27. Slugger expressed his gratitude, saying (via a spokesperson), “I am incredibly humbled, honored, and privileged to be joining this prestigious Hall of Fame.”
The Mascot Hall of Fame recognizes mascots with at least a 10-year career, considering their team contributions, community impact, memorable performances, and design. Slugger, who has served as the Sea Dogs’ Director of Crowd Entertainment since 1994, has entertained over 10 million fans and made 200 community appearances annually.
Beyond the games, Slugger is known for his charitable work, leading initiatives like Strike Out Cancer in Kids and Slugger’s Reading Challenge. He has received multiple awards, including “Greatest Community Impact” and “Best In-Game Skit or Routine.” The Mascot Hall of Fame, located in Whiting, Indiana, is an interactive children’s museum that celebrates mascots and entertains visitors.
