Today for If You Can Hear Her, You Can Be Her, I spoke with Kelsy Hartley and Caitlin Hopkins, founders of Two Maine Mermaids, a community-driven organization centered around water-based events and connection!
Kelsy and Caitlin shared how their journey together began during the pandemic, when they turned to cold water swimming as a way to reset, recharge, and connect. What started as a personal practice quickly grew into something much larger, as more women were drawn to the experience and the sense of community it created.
That momentum led to the creation of organized events, including the Women’s Wave, which has grown into a major annual gathering. Now in its sixth year, the event brings together women of all backgrounds to step into the water, challenge themselves, and support one another.
They highlighted the benefits of cold water swimming, from the physical effects like endorphin release to the mental and emotional strength it builds. More than anything, they emphasized the power of community and the shared experience of doing something outside of your comfort zone!
In addition to Women’s Wave, Two Maine Mermaids continues to expand with initiatives like the Couch to Cold Water program, designed to help beginners ease into the practice, and the Water Women Film Fest, which celebrates stories connected to water and women.
Looking ahead, Kelsy and Caitlin have plans to grow Women’s Wave beyond Maine, with potential expansions into new locations across the country!
Their message to young women is to try something new, lean into community, and not be afraid to take that first step, even if it feels uncomfortable.
