Rap pioneer and 2 Live Crew founder Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell has officially announced he is running for Congress in 2026. During a televised appearance on “This Week in South Florida,” the 65-year-old activist confirmed he will seek the Democratic nomination for Florida’s 20th Congressional District, covering parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Campbell says he was motivated to run by deep frustrations within the community, describing the district as “very underserved.” He is challenging the incumbent, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who is currently facing a federal indictment related to the alleged misuse of disaster relief funds.
Uncle Luke rose to national prominence in the 1990s during a landmark free speech battle over his music. He believes his history as a fighter for civil liberties and his years of youth mentorship in Miami make him a uniquely qualified candidate who can connect with local voters.
Despite running as a Democrat, Campbell argues his greatest asset is his ability to work across party lines. Campbell remains confident that his public history is an open book, saying, “People know my history. But then at the same time, people know the things that I’ve done in the community.”
