1. Time magazine has named Joe Biden and Kamala Harris 2020’s Person of the Year. The two made history on Nov. 7 when they beat Donald Trump. Harris on that day became the country’s first female, first Black and first South Asian vice president-elect. Zoom CEO Eric Yuan was named Businessperson of the Year. 2. The U.S. tops 15.6 million Covid-19 cases with over 292,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported no new covid related deaths and 407 new cases on Thursday. Maine’s death toll is 246 with 4,221 active cases. (THE ROOT)
3. A U.S. government advisory panel endorsed widespread use of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine Thursday. Shots could begin within days, depending on how quickly the Food and Drug Administration signs off, as expected, on the expert committee’s recommendation. (WMTW)
4. The University of New England (UNE), SMCC, Bates and Colby have donated ultra-cold freezers that will be used to store Pfizer’s vaccine. The freezers must be able to support the vaccine, which must be stored at -94 degrees Fahrenheit. (WGME)
5. Ben & Jerry’s announced a new flavor. It’s called “Colin Kaepernick’s Change The Whirled.” It’s a caramel non-dairy sunflower butter base featuring fudge chips, graham cracker swirls, and chocolate cookie swooshes. According to Ben & Jerry’s The non-dairy dessert “celebrates Kaepernick’s courageous work to confront systemic oppression and to stop police violence against Black and Brown people.” (WMTW)
