1. A number of memorials are planned in Maine to remember the victims of the attacks on 9/11. Portland will host a remembrance ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Auburn will hold a private ceremony this year due to coronavirus safety concerns. It starts at 8:30 a.m. and will be live-streamed on the city’s Facebook page. The Freeport Flag Ladies Friday will be out this morning at the corner of West Street and Main Street from 9:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.
2. The U.S. tops 6.3 million coronavirus cases with over 191,000 related deaths. The Maine CDC reported 26 new cases on Thursday. No new deaths have been reported since last Friday. Maine’s death toll is 134 w/ 473 active cases.
3. One of the state’s coronavirus hot spots, the city of Sanford, is strengthening its rules on mask wearing in public places. People must wear a mask in public when social distancing is not possible. Violating the ordinance would start with a written warning, followed by a fine. An attorney for Pastor Todd Bell of the Calvary Baptist Church in Sanford says the church is encouraging congregants not to wear masks.
4. The MPA won’t sponsor football or volleyball under newly released fall high school sports guidelines. The association also announced that for schools in any counties that carry a yellow or red designation on the Department of Education’s color-coded system “there should be no practices or games held until which time they are designated green.” York County is currently designated as yellow.
5. Kansas City defeated the Houston Texans 34-20 in the NFL season opener. Only 17,000 fans were on hand at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium to watch. After the PA announcer called “a moment of silence to support racial equality in our country,” some in the crowd of 17,000 booed.
