1. A federal appeals court tossed out a 2013 death sentence against the convicted Boston Marathon bomber. The 3-judge panel ruled the presiding judge did not adequately screen jurors for potential biases. “But make no mistake: he will spend his remaining days locked up in prison, with the only matter remaining being whether he will die by execution,” a judge wrote. 2. The U.S. tops 4.6 million coronavirus cases with over 154,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported 21 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday. No new deaths have been reported since Friday The statewide death toll is 123 with 423 active cases. (WMTW)
3. All 16 counties in Maine were given a green categorization, that means they may return to in-person learning if state guidelines can be met. If a county is listed as green, that does not mean all school districts in that county must reopen to in-person learning. If school districts determine they can’t reopen safely, they can opt for hybrid or 100% remote learning options. (WMTW)
4. July was the warmest month on record for Portland. The National Weather Service says records date to 1940. The average temperature for the month was 73.3 F, more than half a degree warmer than the previous record, set in July of last year. That is also 4.6 F higher than the average. (WMTW)
5. Coca-Cola on Friday announced that its new Coca-Cola With Coffee will hit stores in January 2021. The new product will contain twice the caffeine as regular Coca-Cola. There will be three flavor options: vanilla, caramel and dark blend. (WMTW)
