1. On Thursday, Southern California experienced a 6.4 magnitude, its largest one in 20 years. Then on Friday, only 11 miles from the original area of the earthquake, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit. No fatalities or major injuries were reported, but the earthquake shook the area from Sacramento to Mexico and prompted the evacuation of the Navy’s largest single landholding. The earthquake left behind cracked and burning buildings, broken roads, obstructed railroad tracks, and leaking water and gas lines. The light damage was largely due to the remoteness of the area where the earthquake occurred but it is estimated that there is more than $100 million in economic damages. (ABC News)
2. The Portland International Jetport is scheduled to add four daily round trips to Boston, starting in September. Travelers will fly on Cape Air, a carrier from Barnstable, Massachusetts with seating for nine passengers. The flight will take about 45 minutes and a round-trip ticket will cost $195. Jetport officials hope the service will open new doors for new connections with Cape Air. (Press Herald)
3. After a scoreless first half, the U.S. women’s national soccer team won the 2019 Women’s World Cup, defeating the Netherlands 2 to 0 on Sunday. The game was held in France and the world watched as the U.S. team marked both the fourth world title and back-to-back wins after taking home the trophy in 1991,1999, and 2015. Co-captain Megan Rapinoe earned the first goal of the game with a penalty kick at the 61-minute mark and just before the 69 minute mark, midfielder Rose Lavelle scored the second goal. At the end of the game, some members of the crowd began chanting “equal pay” as a show of support for the U.S. Women’s National Team. (NBC News)
4. This past Thursday, July 4th, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut ate 71 hot dogs to become the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating champion for the 12th time. He competed against 17 others in front of a large crowd and millions of TV viewers watching the Fourth of July special. Although it was a victory, he was unable to beat his personal best of 74 that gave him the title last year. In the women’s category, Miki Sudo won with 31 hot dogs, also not living up to her 2018 total of 37. Both Chestnut and Sudo took home $10,000. (Inquisitr)
