1. On night 3 of the Democratic National Convention, Kamala Harris became the first woman of color to be nominated to a national party ticket. The night included speeches from Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi. Obama said “Donald Trump hasn’t grown into the job because he can’t… And the consequences of that failure are severe. 170,000 Americans dead. Millions of jobs gone.” (AP)

2. The U.S. tops 5.5 million coronavirus cases with over 173,000 related deaths. The Maine CDC reported no new deaths and 21 new cases on Wednesday. The statewide death toll remains at 127 with 445 active cases. (WMTW)

3. High School Fall Athletic teams in Cumberland County won’t be able to start practicing until September 8th. A final decision on the fall athletic season will be made August 27. The Portland Board of Public Education voted to adopt a hybrid learning plan that will allow most lower grade students to attend at least two days of in-person learning beginning Sept. 14. Students in grades 10-12 at Portland High School and Deering High School would take classes remotely. (WGME)

4. The Maine Secretary of State’s office has received more than 40,000 requests for absentee ballots just two days after launching its online portal. That’s roughly the total number requested in the 2016 general election. (WMTW)
