1. A white gunman was charged Wednesday with killing eight people at three massage parlors in Atlanta. Six of the victims were Asian women. There has been a recent wave of assaults on Asian Americans that coincided with the spread of the coronavirus and the use of racially charged terms to describe it by Donald Trump and others. Portland police say an agitated white man may have committed a hate crime on Monday when he yelled “go back to where you came from” at an Asian American woman before kicking a side mirror off her car. 2. The U.S. tops 29.6 million covid-19 cases with more than 538,000 related deaths. The Maine CDC reported no new deaths and 203 new cases on Wednesday keeping Maine’s death toll at 725 with 84 Mainers currently hospitalized. People in their 20s now make up the highest percentage of positive cases followed closely by those under 20. (PRESS HERALD)
3. Gov. Janet Mills extended the state of civil emergency for another 30 days on Wednesday, the 13th time she has done so since the pandemic began in Maine. “The finish line is on the horizon. I urge all Maine people to keep doing the basic things that keep us healthy” Mills said in a statement. (WMTW)
4. Dick Hoyt, who inspired thousands by pushing his disabled son, Rick, in a wheelchair in 32 Boston Marathons and hundreds of other races has died. The Boston Athletic Association in a statement called Hoyt a legend who showed determination, passion and love for his son every marathon day. (NEWS CENTER)
5. The IRS announced that the federal tax filing deadline would be pushed back a month to May 17th. The extension applies only to federal taxes, not state or local income tax. (NBC)
