1. Governor Janet Mills extended the Civil State of Emergency another 30 days Wednesday, through October 1. This allows Maine to draw down critical federal resources and to deploy all available tools to respond to and contain COVID-19. This is Mills’ sixth extension of the State of Civil Emergency.
2. The U.S. tops 6 million coronavirus cases with over 184,000 related deaths. The Maine CDC reported one new death and 19 new cases on Wednesday. Maine’s death toll is 133 w/ 456 active cases. Maine ranks second lowest in the nation in terms of positive cases, sixth lowest in deaths, second lowest in patients ever-hospitalized and sixth highest in the percentage of people who have recovered.
3. With outbreaks at the York County Jail and a long-term care facility in Madison, the state now says 143 cases are linked to a wedding held Aug. 7 in Millinocket. A third active outbreak, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Sanford, is being investigated as possibly connected. The pastor of that church, Todd Bell, officiated the wedding. So far, five cases have been traced to the church.
4. The MPA announced it will delay the start of the fall high school sports season one week to Sept. 14. In the coming days, the MPA will work to modify their guidance for fall sports and come up with a solution “that will honor the State’s safety protocols.” Meanwhile RSU 24 announced announcing the cancellation of their fall sports season.
5. Illusionist David Blaine ascended nearly 25,000 feet into the air over Arizona while hanging from a cluster of balloons. The stunt, which Blaine dubbed Ascension, was YouTube Originals most-watched show ever. Blaine released himself from the balloons and fell for about 30 seconds before deploying his chute.
